Beneficiary 8. Trifolio-M GmbH (TrifM), Germany
Trifolio-M GmbH has been active in biological pest control for 20 years. It has currently 18 employees, with main emphasis on R+D, where 10 employees are active. Trifolio-M has developed two biological insecticides derived from plants, for which the registration under EEC/91/414 is under way (DAR’s received). The active ingredients of both insecticides have been isolated in our GLP (Good Laboratory Practise) certified laboratory and are now subject to permanent purification to serve as analytical standards. Synthesis of pheromones and production of appropriate traps is another area for the company. All products are subject to quality control in our labs, which are equipped with HPLC and GC. Neem-based further products for human and animal hygiene have also been developed and are marketed by Trifolio-M. The youngest branch is the development of natural substances for the control of plant diseases. For investigation of the efficacy of plant protection products, Trifolio-M has its own laboratories, a testing field, and greenhouses. Two-thirds of the staff are female! The comprehensive experience of Trifolio-M in developing botanical pesticides will be put into this project to accelerate the development of new environmentally friendly botanicals.
49. Dr. Hubertus Kleeberg is the general manager of Trifolio-M. He has experience with running of 10 national and 1 international projects. He will be the responsible person for the project.
50. Dr. E. Hummel, agronomist, has more than 20 years of experience in trial design for the development of insecticidal substances and products.
51. Mrs. Dr. Christine Kliche-Spory is the head of the quality control and by this well experienced in the implementation of GLP-structures. She is also well experienced in the extraction and isolation of single compounds from plant material.
52. Mrs. Dr. Beate Ruch is the head of the analytical lab and will cover the analytical part. She is well experienced in the development of methods for residue analysis on different plant and environmental matrices and analytical quality control of extracts/products.
53. Mrs. Sylvia Cergel, agricultural engineer, will conduct the efficacy trails for fungicide effects.
Role in the Project

  • Efficacy screening in vitro and with Mini-plants, as well as in the greenhouse and in the field under practical conditions (WP4).
  • Identification of active ingredients by preparative TLC and/or HPLC, optimisation and standardisation of extraction technology; optimisation of formulations (WP2, WP4).
  • Determination of persistence/degradation of substances in the environment, and screening of toxicological and ecotoxicological risk potential of the active ingredients and the formulations.
  • Critical evaluation of the requirements for registration of promising extracts and their market potential (WP6).
